By Ffion Bardouille Thompson – Exercise Physiologist
Aerial sports, pole dance, acrobatics and adult gymnastics have all increased in popularity over the last decade, and we love to see more people staying strong, active and having fun!
With any sport or increase in training load, there is a risk of injury, especially if your training is not supported by an appropriate strengthening program. Structured strength and flexibility training can help lower the risk of and/ or enhance recovery following injury. There is a reason your coach or instructor is always encouraging you to do your conditioning. Movements in Pole, aerial, acrobatic and gymnastic type sports can be very complex, therefor it can be hard to know where start. Especially if you are experiencing aches and pains.
Common aches and pains that may occur include:
- Shoulder pain
- Hip pain
- Wrist pain
- Hamstring pain
- Lower back pain
Injury prevention is always better than cure. If you experience niggling or pain when training, it is worth seeking personalised advice from an Exercise Physiologist familiar with this space. Or if you are injured, see a Physiotherapist.
At Higher Function Physio & Pilates, we’re here to support you and help you return to the activities you love.
Ffion, one of our Exercise Physiologists, brings a wealth of experience from her background in gymnastics and acrobatic instruction. She’s also well-versed in pole and aerial training (see Ffion in action below!), and passionate about using her knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy to help you train smarter—for both performance and longevity.
We’ll leave the new tricks to your instructors and coaches—but when it comes to keeping your body strong, balanced, and injury-free, we’ve got your back. Book to see an Exercise Physiologist here.
