By Janet Fabbri – Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist
Pain is complex and understanding that it is related to stress, rather than body tissue damage is a very difficult concept to accept.
Neuro Orthopaedic Institute (NOI) Australasia are a group of Physiotherapists and Pain Neuroscientists dedicated to changing the way pain is viewed. All of our Physios are trained in this highly researched and current evidence-based practice. They provide ‘healthy notions of self through neuroscience knowledge’ worldwide. There are currently five critical conceptual change issues which underpin this:
- Injury or disease does not mean that you feel pain
- The nervous system moves and stretches as we move
- Pain, stress and performance are outputs of the brain
- Knowledge and movement are the greatest pain and stress liberators
- Nervous system plasticity gives new hope and technique

How can Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology help your pain?
We incorporate this education into all of our Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology sessions as well as our Clinical Exercise classes. We take the time to do this education, so our sessions are often longer than you may have had with previous therapists. We want to make you independent and not need to keep coming for “passive hands on” treatment, as this has been shown to not be effective in the long term. It is very good in the short term with exercise and education.
